The Barbershop Harmony Society is currently offering internships for the spring/summer of 2009 for the following position: Graphic Artist or Writer/Editor for full or part-time work on a pro bono basis. All intern positions are non-paid, and freelance, but all contributors will receive a one-page presentation of themselves on our website.

The Harmonizer, the Society’s full-color bi-monthly magazine is distributed to more than 30,000 members in the United States and Canada. The organization is seeking a few top-notch interns to assist with content, layout and production work for the magazine as well as the association website www.barbershop.org, which logs approximately 1.78 million page views annually.

The Publications Editor maintains a six-month editorial calendar. The Harmonizer is a wonderful starting point for emerging writers and a breath of fresh air for more established writers.

Ideal candidates would be college students who are interested in pursuing a career as a reporter, writer, copy editor, page designer, or graphic artist. Candidate must be able to juggle numerous projects and responsibilities working quickly with strong attention to detail. Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office, Pagemaker, and Illustrator or Photoshop. InDesign is a plus.

Why Intern?

Graphic designers prepare for this vocation by developing a portfolio. A portfolio is a collection of your best work. It demonstrates your skills to future clients or employers. A portfolio may include articles written, computer images, photos, and print samples.

What We Require:
  • Graphic design applicants must provide a portfolio that includes three desktop publishing samples
  • Writers must submit electronic copies of 5-10 news clips or articles written
  • A current resume
  • A 1000-word essay on a topic you love. Show your best writing – matter of style, clarity of thought, clean, effective prose. Blogs, journals, reviews, correspondence welcome. Be your best you!
