2022 International Contest qualification process

2022 International Contest qualification process

Chorus qualification and entry

Who qualifies automatically?

Invitations to the 2022 International Chorus Contest are automatically extended to all choruses who had previously qualified for 2021 Cleveland, regardless of whether they had accepted the invitation.

How else can choruses qualify for Charlotte 2022?

The long interruption to regular rehearsals caused by the pandemic resulted in choruses taking some time to return to their normal performing level. For this reason, the qualification score for the 2022 International Chorus Contest has been lowered to 78. This means that additional choruses to be invited include:

  • All choruses that competed in the Fall of 2019 and were their district rep or were offered a wild card but declined the invitation, as these choruses all scored at 78 or higher.
  • Any choruses that scored 78 or higher at International 2019 or at their Fall 2019 contest.
  • Any choruses that score 78 or higher at a Fall 2021 contest (if their district held one). Any Fall 2021 contests that happen will be to qualify choruses only based on scoring 78 or higher. The highest scoring chorus will NOT automatically receive an invitation as district representative.
  • Any chorus from an Alliance organization that qualifies to represent that organization through the existing process.
  • Any chorus that submits a video of a contest set that is scored at 78 or higher. The chorus must register for video qualification by December 3, 2021 but the video will not need to be submitted until the spring of 2022 at a date to be determined.
  • Any chorus that scored 78 or higher at a Spring 2022 contest with at least a double panel of BHS judges. The chorus must register for a live spring contest qualification by December 3, 2021.

Exceptions:

  • The deadline to accept an invitation into the Chorus Finals based on prior scores is December 3, 2021, the same as the deadline to register for video or live Spring 2022 qualification.
  • The normal rules regarding replacement of an International Chorus Competitor will not apply for 2022. (See II.F.2 International Chorus Contests, Replacement.)
  • All other rules apply as written in the C&J Handbook.

How will choruses be notified?

Age limits revised for 2022 and 2023

We know how hard singers have worked to qualify for this event, and the cancellation for the second year will bring questions on how we will handle the age limit.

  • We are temporarily increasing the maximum age to 27 for the 2022 Varsity Quartet Contest and Chorus Invitational.
  • The maximum age will be reduced to 26 for the 2023 event.
  • The maximum age will return to the program’s previous age limit of 25 in 2024 and for subsequent events.

Ensemble classifications

A quartet or chorus, can enter a contest as a men’s, women’s, or mixed harmony ensemble.

  • Men’s ensembles consist of only members who identify as male.
  • Women’s ensembles consist of only members who identify as female.
  • Mixed harmony ensembles do not identify as all-male or all-female. (See the Contest Expansion Plan Summary, December 2019.)

Multiple entries

You can also compete in multiple quartets. You can compete in as many quartets as you want, regardless of classification at the District level. Currently, you can also qualify for International, but only one quartet per classification (men’s, women’s, mixed harmony). See the December 2019 rule change below. Just make sure that each quartet is comprised of no more than two of the same members.

Article I.A.5: Competing in Multiple Quartets In international and international preliminary contests a member may compete with no more than one quartet in an ensemble classification, regardless of the number of quartets or districts to which the member belongs. If a member is competing in two quartets in different ensemble classifications, each quartet in which they are competing must be comprised of no more than two of the same members. Any requests for exceptions to this rule must be made to the Society Contest and Judging Committee through its chair.

A member may compete in multiple quartets in any division or district contest, but each quartet must be comprised of no more than two of the same members.
